ICE asked North Carolina authorities to hold 19-year-old Angel Israel Deras-Rivas after his arrest in Garner on murder and felony child abuse charges tied to a 14-month-old's bathtub drowning.
The detainer was filed the same day as his arrest and asks Wake County officials not to release him, giving ICE up to 48 extra hours to take him into federal custody.
An arrest warrant cited by local media says Deras-Rivas was caring for his stepchild when he allegedly left the toddler unattended in a bathtub filled with water.
DHS said the Salvadoran national entered the U.S. through Texas in October 2023 and was released into the country, using the case to renew criticism of Biden-era immigration policies.
