Italian Study Links 4-6 Daily Coffees to 59% Lower MASLD Odds

Summary
1,079 adults in southern Italy who drank espresso or moka coffee daily showed lower odds of MASLD, with the apparent benefit strengthening cup by cup and leveling off at 4-6 cups a day.
One cup was linked to about 52% lower odds versus less than one cup daily, rising to 53% at two cups, 55% at three and 59% at 4-6 cups after adjustment for diet, BMI, smoking and other factors.
Espresso and moka brews may differ from filtered or instant coffee because pressure-based extraction without paper filters retains more diterpenes and chlorogenic acids, compounds tied to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
The authors said the findings support viewing Italian-style coffee as a possible functional food for MASLD prevention, but the observational design, self-reported diet data and missing physical-activity data limit causal claims.
The study adds brewing-method detail to broader evidence linking coffee to liver health, including a 2025 review and a 2021 UK Biobank analysis showing lower chronic liver disease risk among coffee drinkers.
