Q: Can a simple software tweak truly stop thieves from taking your stolen phone offline?

Not by itself, but it can make a stolen phone much harder to take offline in the crucial first moments. Google’s planned Android change would require unlocking the phone before a user can toggle Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, or Airplane Mode from Quick Settings on the lock screen. That matters because those are the fastest controls a thief can use to cut tracking and remote lock features. If those toggles are blocked, Find Hub, location services, and remote commands have a better chance of staying active long enough for the owner to respond. Still, this is only one layer. A thief could still power the phone off, remove the SIM on some devices, place it in a signal-blocking pouch, or simply keep moving until the battery dies. The software tweak does not make a phone impossible to disconnect; it mainly closes one easy route. Its real value is when combined with Android’s broader anti-theft tools. Google’s Theft Detection Lock can automatically lock a phone if it senses a snatch-and-run pattern. Offline Device Lock can lock it after it loses connectivity. Identity Check can require biometrics for sensitive changes, helping stop thieves who know or observed the PIN. Android 17’s updated “Mark as lost” can also hide Quick Settings and block new Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth pairings. So the tweak is useful, but not a silver bullet. It improves the odds of tracking and recovery by buying time, which is often what matters most after a theft.

The restriction targets settings thieves commonly use to cut off tracking on stolen phones, while lower-risk tiles such as flashlight, auto-rotate, and battery saver would remain accessible.
That marks a retreat from Android 17 QPR 1 Beta 5 code, which pointed to a broader lockout covering every Quick Settings tile except flashlight.
The change is not live in Canary 2608, and because it comes from work-in-progress code, Google could still revise or drop it before public release.
