PS5 Leads U.S. Console Use at 46% as Switch Trails at 33%

Q: If PC and mobile gamers were included, would PlayStation still hold the crown for America's favorite gaming platform?

Probably not. PlayStation would likely remain the top dedicated console brand, but it would lose the title of America’s overall favorite gaming platform once PC and especially mobile are included. Statista’s console-only survey shows PS5 leading U.S. consoles at 46%, ahead of Switch at 33%. That is strong evidence of Sony’s dominance in the console segment, reinforced by PS5’s large installed base and PlayStation Network’s scale. But those results exclude the two biggest broad gaming categories outside consoles. Broader U.S. usage data points the other way in an all-platform comparison. ESA figures show mobile is the most widely used gaming device in America, reaching about 80% of players, while console and PC trail well behind. Separate Statista data on U.S. adults also found 67% regularly game on smartphones, compared with 30% on consoles and 29% on PC/laptop. Another U.S. dataset shows PC usage roughly level with or slightly above console usage overall. That means if the question is about the single most-used platform category in America, mobile would almost certainly rank No. 1, not PlayStation. If the comparison is narrowed to individual hardware ecosystems rather than categories, PS5 would still be one of the strongest standalone platforms, but it would be competing against much broader, more ubiquitous devices such as smartphones and PCs that many Americans already own for non-gaming purposes. So Sony keeps the console crown, but not the all-platform crown.

46% of 3,200 U.S. respondents told Statista they regularly play on PS5, putting Sony’s current console well ahead of rivals in the latest survey.
33% said they use Nintendo Switch regularly, while 27% still play on PS4, showing Sony also retains a sizable audience on its previous-generation hardware.
Xbox One ranked slightly above Xbox Series X|S in the survey, suggesting Microsoft’s newer consoles have not yet overtaken the older platform among regular users.
The console-only snapshot excluded PC, but it reinforces PlayStation’s broad lead in the U.S. console market.
