Summary
$129.5 billion marked the Massachusetts pension fund’s fourth straight record year-end, after the PRIT fund grew by $14.1 billion net of benefit payments in fiscal 2026.
A 12.7% return generated $14.7 billion and gave the fund its strongest fiscal-year performance in five years, with all seven major asset classes posting gains for a second straight year.
That streak was the first back-to-back all-positive year across every major asset class in 20 years, and the 12.7% return comfortably beat the fund’s 7% actuarial target and 9% historical average.
PRIM documents still showed underperformance against internal benchmarks: the fund lagged the 14.8% total capital benchmark by 2.1 points and the 14.4% net implementation benchmark by 1.6 points.
The PRIT fund invests retirement assets for more than 300,000 Massachusetts state, teacher and municipal beneficiaries, underscoring the scale of the record balance.
