Footage shot off Australia appears to show the first humpback whale birth ever captured by drone, after pilot Alex spotted a lone adult moving slowly in shallow water during migration.
The whale suddenly rose to the surface and delivered a calf; the newborn then shot up for its first breaths as the mother quickly turned back to locate it.
Alex said he alerted ORRCA after the sighting and believes the video joins only four other complete documentations of a humpback whale birth.
Scientists could use the recording to study humpback reproduction, maternal behavior and the first moments of a calf’s life.
