A nearly complete 30-million-year-old Mesocyon coryphaeus fossil from Oregon has been identified as one of North America’s most complete pre-Ice Age dog skeletons, giving researchers their clearest view yet of the species.
The skeleton shows Mesocyon was short, stocky and still adapted for climbing rather than sustained running, with a rotatable forearm, robust bones and a large first toe unlike modern cursorial dogs.
A wrist osteochondroma—seen in about 60% of the earliest known dog fossils—helped confirm the animal’s canid identity, while the preserved baculum established that the specimen was male.
The fossil sat encased in rock for more than 30 years after its late-1980s discovery near John Day Fossil Beds, first mistaken for an oreodont before preparation work in 2012 revealed most of the skeleton.
The find adds evidence that early dogs evolved in forested North America about 40 million years ago and that extinct canid lineages preserved ways of life, including climbing ecology, that later disappeared entirely.
