Summary
10,000 simulated collectors needed about 110-130 booster packs to finish the numbered base set in five of six recent Pokémon TCG releases, with medians ranging from 111 for Perfect Order to 133 for Chaos Rising.
Ascended Heroes was the outlier at roughly 771 packs because it includes 39 double-rare cards, versus nine or 10 in the other sets, making the final missing cards far harder to pull.
Freshness also faded quickly: after about 15 packs, fewer than half the cards in a new booster were typically unseen, and by 30 packs most sets yielded only one or two new cards.
The model used published pull rates from thousands of real pack openings and focused on base sets of around 100 cards, excluding ultra-rare secret and illustration cards that are much harder to complete.
The findings frame Pokémon's 30th-anniversary card hype through the classic coupon collector problem: novelty drops fast even as full completion remains distant.
