UNM Brands Kobakhidze's Aug. 7 War Remark Treasonous, Says It Aids Russia

Georgia’s United National Movement said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s claim that Georgia’s commander-in-chief started the 2008 war on Aug. 7 amounts to treason.
The opposition party said the remark mirrors Russia’s official narrative, politically justifies the occupation of Georgian territories and threatens the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a special statement, UNM argued the comment serves a Russian plan to speed annexation of occupied regions and undermine international court rulings that identified Russia as the aggressor.
Made at a memorial to Georgians killed in the war, the statement also insulted fallen heroes and patriots, UNM said, as it urged citizens to unite against what it called a Russia-controlled regime.
