It also carries unusually strong symbolic weight at this rally: Sturgis was founded in 1938 by Indian dealer Clarence “Pappy” Hoel, and Indian is explicitly tying the bike to that origin with 1930s-inspired red-and-cream paint, heritage badging and a tribute to the early race bikes. For enthusiasts focused on history and exclusivity, that gives Indian a powerful narrative edge. Harley’s Deadwood, however, looks built for wider appeal. At $17,999, it is far less expensive, mechanically more performance-forward, and aimed at mainstream rally riders rather than collectors. The blacked-out Softail bobber uses the Milwaukee-Eight 117 Classic with claimed output of 98 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque, and its postwar custom-bike styling closely matches the Sturgis mood. Harley also benefits from enormous on-site visibility and a larger mass-market audience. So whether Indian “outshines” Harley depends on the measure. In rarity, heritage and conversation among collectors, Indian has the advantage. In overall crowd exposure, accessibility and likely test-ride interest, Harley’s Deadwood probably remains the bigger rally-floor story.

About 500,000 riders are expected in Sturgis and the Black Hills as the 86th annual motorcycle rally gets underway, turning the South Dakota town of 7,100 into a 10-day hub for races, concerts and group rides.
This year's program stretches across the region with stunt shows, demonstrations and vendor events, while country star Lainey Wilson is set to headline on Aug. 12 alongside acts including Megadeth, Rob Zombie and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle are using the rally to unveil new models, including Harley's Deadwood and Indian's Chief Vintage Sturgis SD Edition tied to the event's postwar and 1930s heritage.
The rally also anchors tourism rides to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, the Badlands and Devils Tower, extending its economic and cultural footprint well beyond downtown Sturgis.
Founded in 1938 by Indian dealer Pappy Hoel, the gathering began as a community for World War II veterans and has grown into what organizers bill as the world's largest motorcycle rally.
