Doctors Say Fat-Linked Absorption Can Lift Vitamin D3 Levels 32%

A fat-containing meal can raise peak vitamin D3 blood levels by an average 32% versus a fat-free meal, while Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis and some bariatric surgeries can block absorption.
Obesity can also keep blood levels low because vitamin D is sequestered in fat tissue, and drugs including orlistat and steroids may further reduce absorption or disrupt metabolism.
Liver disease and chronic kidney disease can break the conversion chain from swallowed vitamin D to active forms, meaning normal intake may still not translate into usable vitamin D.
Doctors warned against self-increasing doses because excess vitamin D can dangerously raise calcium; 2024 Endocrine Society guidance says healthy adults under 75 should not routinely exceed standard recommendations.
