Summary
At least 345 people have fallen ill and 36 have been hospitalized in a multistate salmonella outbreak tied to fresh jalapeños, prompting recalls of 18 ready-to-eat meat and poultry products.
FDA traced the peppers to a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, with Coast Citrus Distributors importing them into the U.S.; the recalled wraps, bowls and salads were sold in 24 states through retailers including Walmart, Kroger, H-E-B and Wawa.
No illnesses have been confirmed from the recalled prepared foods themselves, but FSIS said more downstream products could be identified as the ingredient recall expands.
Among 191 patients interviewed, 93% reported eating at Mexican-style restaurants before getting sick, and regulators said Chipotle and QDOBA both received the contaminated jalapeños.
Chipotle switched suppliers on July 20, QDOBA stopped using jalapeños on July 28, and FDA said those steps mean there is no current ongoing risk to diners at those chains.
