Yes, Jobe can plausibly anchor Detroit’s rotation, but only if the Tigers treat him as a long-term asset rather than a workhorse right away. The encouraging part is real. In his Aug. 8 return, Jobe threw five scoreless innings, allowed one hit and one walk, struck out four, and touched 100.1 mph. His rehab progression was deliberate, and Detroit repeatedly emphasized strike-throwing, delivery repeatability and physical response more than radar-gun readings. A.J. Hinch said the outing was “almost a perfect outing,” and pitching coach Chris Fetter told Jobe it was the best he had looked. That does not mean the risk is gone. Tommy John surgery has become common, but it does not make a pitcher injury-proof, especially one with elite velocity. Jobe has only 53 major-league innings on his résumé, and even before surgery he was still learning to command his arsenal, finish hitters and avoid hard contact. The Tigers themselves signaled caution throughout rehab, building him up as if it were spring training and stressing that five to six innings was still an important threshold. The most reasonable view is that Detroit should see Jobe as a potential future No. 1 or No. 2 starter, not yet a full replacement for Tarik Skubal. If his mechanics hold, his command continues to improve and the club limits workload smartly over the next year, he has the stuff to lead a rotation. If Detroit chases immediate volume because of the Skubal trade, the injury risk rises sharply.
