Israeli officials are increasingly focused on whether U.S. backing can still be counted on, with some now treating the future of the alliance as a bigger concern than the Iran war itself.
Ofir Akunis, Israel's consul general in New York, tied that anxiety to U.S. political shifts, citing recent wins by progressive Democrats critical of Israel and of American military intervention.
Akunis said Israel still wants Washington at its side, but argued it must prepare to become "more independent than in the past" if traditional bipartisan support keeps weakening.
That thinking points to a possible "post-American Middle East"—not necessarily a sudden U.S. exit, but a region where Israel assumes U.S. influence and commitment may become less reliable.
