The summer of 2026 saw record-breaking heat on land and sea, driven by human-caused global warming and a massive El Niño event. Persistent high-pressure systems over Western Europe led to severe drought and soil drying, which reduced the land’s ability to cool itself and caused rapid heat buildup. This extreme heat triggered widespread marine heatwaves, disrupted marine food webs, and fueled explosive wildfires. The resulting drought destroyed millions of tonnes of crops, strained energy infrastructure, and caused thousands of excess deaths. In response, cities and governments are appointing Chief Heat Officers and redesigning adaptation strategies to address the escalating crisis of extreme heat.
