Google Turns 15GB Android Storage Into Google One Funnel to Fund AI Push

Google One has shifted from optional backup service to a near-default Android subscription as the free 15GB storage tier no longer covers typical phone backups, photos, videos and Gmail use.
15GB now fills much faster because unlimited photo backups are gone, WhatsApp backups count against the cap, and larger 4K media and app data make storage warnings—and paid upgrades—harder to avoid.
Google is tying that squeeze to a broader AI strategy: subscription revenue helps fund Gemini and other compute-heavy services, while bundling storage with AI tools gives the company a steadier return on rising infrastructure costs.
Paid tiers now bundle more than cloud space, including Gemini Advanced, Workspace AI features, smart-home extras and up to 5TB storage, making them attractive for power users but effectively pushing casual Android owners into the same paid ecosystem.
The longer-term risk is lock-in: once users store years of data and rely on bundled AI features, Google has more room to raise prices, reinforcing the end of simple free cloud storage on Android.
