Senate Passes $408 Million Wildfire Tax Relief Bill, Sending It to Trump

The Senate on Aug. 7 approved the Doug LaMalfa Federal Disaster Tax Relief Certainty Act, advancing tax relief for victims of disasters that struck between Dec. 28, 2019, and July 4, 2025.
The bill would scrap the rule requiring losses to exceed 10% of adjusted gross income before individuals can claim a disaster deduction, and it would make wildfire relief payments nontaxable.
The Congressional Budget Office estimated the measure would reduce federal revenue by $408 million from 2026 through 2036.
California’s 2025 wildfires destroyed nearly 13,000 housing units and caused $28.0 billion to $53.8 billion in damage, underscoring the scale of losses the legislation targets.
The bipartisan bill was pushed by Sens. Adam Schiff and Rick Scott and drew praise from Republican wildfire victims including Spencer Pratt before heading to President Donald Trump for approval.
