Summary
Kiel Baitinger-Peterson was identified Aug. 10 as the Madison officer who shot and killed Corey Ruiz after the July 22 confrontation.
Police said Ruiz, 38, was first confronted over reports of bicycle theft and checking car doors, then pulled a knife during a struggle at Baldwin and Williamson and injured an officer.
Two officers used a taser before Baitinger-Peterson fired, and Ruiz was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Four responding officers remain on administrative leave while the Wisconsin DOJ investigates the shooting as a homicide.
Madison police do not use body-worn cameras, and Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has said she will again seek funding for them in the next budget.
