Summary
Disney+ will stream Chris Carter’s new cut of 2008’s “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” on Aug. 14 under the subtitle “Vrach Frankenshteyn,” nearly 20 years after the original film.
Carter said the recut restores horror and standalone mystery elements that 20th Century Fox and the MPA pushed him to remove in 2008 to secure a PG-13 rating, and is actually shorter than the theatrical version.
20th Century Studios backed the director’s cut after a conversation with studio chief Steve Asbell, giving Carter a chance to release what he called the version audiences never got to see.
The filmmaker said the original made money on a budget of under $25 million but was underpromoted, and David Duchovny has already seen the new cut and responded positively.
Carter also said he still wants to finish the Mulder-Scully story after the 2016 and 2018 revival seasons, though any return may depend on how Ryan Coogler’s separate Hulu update develops.
