Summary
North Carolina Republicans tapped state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom on Monday to replace Rep. Chuck Edwards as the GOP nominee in the 11th Congressional District.
Edwards dropped his re-election bid last week after a House Ethics Committee report recommended censure over persistent inappropriate conduct toward two young female staffers.
The report said his behavior included lavish gifts, comments on appearance, invitations to intimate dinners and vacations, and affectionate notes that a reasonable observer could view as sexual or romantic advances.
Balkcom said she was "blessed" to receive the nomination, and the state party said she brings Western North Carolina values and experience in agriculture, banking and finance.
Ted Budd and Greg Murphy have endorsed Balkcom, who now advances to a general-election matchup against Democrat Jamie Ager.
