Princeton Student Self-Retracts 1 Paper After 2 Method Errors Undercut PVC Study

Wiley retracted Rishika Porandla’s sole-authored paper in May after the Princeton student alerted the journal that two methodological errors made its conclusions unreliable.
Two core flaws drove the retraction: the study did not independently verify actual electron-beam dose against programmed exposure time, and later imaging showed gold nanoparticles were not uniformly dispersed in the PVC matrix.
Porandla uncovered the problems while revisiting her high-school research in a Princeton course, then sought either a correction or retraction because she did not want other researchers citing or building on inaccurate results.
The journal’s editor said self-retractions are uncommon and praised her direct disclosure; a 2013 study found about 22% of 1,423 retractions were self-reported.
Porandla is now reworking the study with stronger validation and redesigned methods, and the journal has encouraged her to submit a corrected version.
