A 200-person study in Translational Psychiatry found higher levels of three microbes—Allisonella, Prevotella and Cloacibacillus evryensis—were associated with stronger psychopathic traits in healthy adults.
Researchers saw no clear link from overall gut or oral microbial diversity, but participant-by-participant comparisons tied specific taxa to traits such as callousness, manipulation, impulsivity and antisociality.
Treponema vincentii in the oral microbiome showed the opposite pattern, with higher levels linked to lower psychopathy markers.
The team said the findings are correlational and not yet peer-reviewed, though prior research suggests inflammation, emotional processing and GABA production could help explain the associations.
If confirmed, the authors say microbiota and their metabolic outputs could offer biomarkers that extend psychopathy research beyond brain-structure models.
