Israeli actress Swell Ariel Or is using her upcoming film "Tankistas" to intensify her post-Oct. 7 advocacy, saying authentic representation of Israelis and Jews matters more to her than Oscars or Hollywood status.
The war drama—now in editing in English and Hebrew and due next year—follows the IDF’s first all-female tank unit and its 17-hour defense during the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks.
Or, 27, plays the unit captain leading three armored vehicles and said the cast spent significant time with the real women behind the story; she also served in the IDF before moving to Hollywood.
She argues the film differs from formulaic female-hero projects because it is a women-written, true-story account of complex Israeli combat soldiers, not a commercially engineered empowerment narrative.
The project fits Or’s broader public role since Oct. 7, as she has spoken frequently about antisemitism, Israeli identity and the six people she knew who were killed at the Nova music festival.
