Summary
Sri Lanka will get its best view of a six-planet alignment before sunrise on Aug. 12, with Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune stretching in an arc across the eastern and southern sky.
Four planets should be visible without equipment, while Uranus needs binoculars and Neptune a telescope; the clearest window is roughly 4:30 a.m. to 5:15 a.m. in Colombo, 60 to 90 minutes before sunrise.
Mars and Saturn are expected to be easiest to spot, while Mercury and Jupiter will sit low on the eastern horizon and may be harder to catch in the brightening sky.
The Perseid meteor shower will peak from the night of Aug. 12 into early Aug. 13, with a new moon expected to deliver darker skies and as many as 100 meteors per hour under clear conditions.
Observers are advised to look northeast after midnight for the Perseids and allow 20 to 30 minutes for their eyes to adjust; Sri Lanka's near-equatorial location should also favor the planet parade.
