Apple’s new Siri AI on watchOS 27 still depends on an iPhone because the Apple Watch is not doing the heavy AI work itself. Apple’s own wording says Siri AI on the watch is available only when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby, which means the watch acts more like a remote interface than a fully independent AI device. The likely reason is hardware limits. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI rely on large on-device models and, for some tasks, Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. That requires far more memory and processing power than the watch has. Apple has drawn similar hardware lines elsewhere: even among iPhones, some advanced Siri features are limited to models with more RAM and newer chips. The watch’s small battery also makes sustained AI processing impractical. Apple is trying to preserve its privacy approach, too. Unlike some rivals that offload nearly everything to the cloud, Apple emphasizes on-device processing whenever possible. That design makes a nearby compatible iPhone the simplest way to bring more capable Siri to the wrist without weakening privacy standards or overloading the watch. So the breakthrough is real, but the independence is not. watchOS 27 gives the Apple Watch a much smarter Siri experience, a dedicated Siri app, and synced conversations across devices, but only by leaning on the iPhone as the real compute engine. For users, that means better answers and actions from the wrist, but not true phone-free Siri AI yet.

iOS 27 public beta 3 is now available for iPhone, giving testers early access to Apple’s fall update with Siri AI, a redesigned Screen Time experience and broader Apple Intelligence features.
Siri is the headline change: it now supports ongoing conversations, can search personal data and onscreen content, take actions in apps, and in beta 3 gains early access to some third-party app information.
Apple says iOS 27 can launch apps up to 30% faster, speed nearby AirDrop transfers by up to 80%, and show new Photos captures up to 70% faster, with scheduler optimizations reaching back to iPhone 11.
The beta also expands AI across Safari, Photos, Passwords and Shortcuts, while overhauling parental controls with category-based Time Allowances, app Schedules and broader safety checks for children.
iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and newer plus newer iPhone SE models, but Apple Intelligence—and therefore Siri AI—requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer; Apple plans the final release this fall.
