That matters because Apple Watch cellular service is not free. The watch must be on an eligible carrier plan, usually linked to the same provider as the iPhone, and smartwatch service adds a recurring monthly cost. Over 24 to 36 months, those fees can eat up much or all of the upfront “free” or heavily discounted device savings. For many buyers, a straightforward retail discount is the cleaner deal. Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target are cutting about $100 off Series 11 GPS models with no service commitment. Apple also offers trade-in credit and 0% Apple Card Monthly Installments on Apple Watch purchases without forcing a carrier lock-in. The carrier offer only makes financial sense if you already want the cellular model, truly need standalone connectivity, and expect to stay with that carrier for the full term. If not, the cheaper-looking deal can become the more expensive one.
