Summary
Nearly 1,700 newly married couples surveyed by BYU reported stronger communication, better conflict resolution and lower marital stress when they exercised together, with walking the most common shared activity.
Shared workouts outperformed solo exercise on all three relationship measures, and researchers said the clearest effect was on communication.
About 60% of husbands and wives said they exercised, but only about one-third did so together, leaving roughly half of exercisers not sharing activity with their spouse.
Researchers said walking may help because it creates regular, low-distraction time for conversation, listening and feeling heard, though they cautioned it is not a cure for deeper relationship problems.
