Zachary Nicholas Mertens, 20, of Burlington, Kentucky, was identified Tuesday as the person who died after falling at Oregon's Silver Falls State Park.
Oregon State Police said Mertens crossed into a closed area at the top of 177-foot South Falls to pose for photos, then slipped and fell into the water below.
Emergency crews responded around 6:30 p.m. Monday, and witnesses tried to save him, but he died at the scene.
The death followed what investigators described as an off-trail breach of barriers at one of the park's main attractions; no additional details were released.
