$47 billion secured last year will fund at least 1,200 miles of new and replacement border barriers, nearly doubling the wall system to more than 1,360 miles along the U.S.-Mexico border.
More than 300 miles are already underway or finished, with issued contracts topping $33 billion as the administration targets completion of the main wall by the end of next year.
The buildout goes beyond fencing: it includes over 500 miles of secondary barriers, sensors and smart cameras, 180 miles of vehicle barriers in Big Bend, and more than 500 miles of Rio Grande floating buoys.
That funding exceeds total U.S. spending on border barriers over the past 20 years combined; in Trump's first term, about 450 miles were completed, mostly replacing existing structures.
Critics question extending barriers into rural areas as illegal crossings have fallen sharply from Biden-era highs, even as construction has already begun in places like Big Bend National Park.
