The device decides how much it can accept. So if a phone tops out around 20W to 30W, plugging it into a 100W or 140W GaN charger will not make it charge faster than that limit. For most smartphone users, 20W to 30W is the practical sweet spot; 45W is useful for some premium phones, tablets and light laptops. The bigger GaN models in Amazon’s sale make more sense if you charge several devices at once or want one brick for a laptop, phone and accessories. GaN itself is not overkill. It is mainly a size-and-efficiency upgrade: smaller, cooler-running chargers with more ports. The potential overkill is the wattage, not the GaN technology. A 100W four-port charger can be a smart buy for a desk or travel setup, but unnecessary if you only charge one phone overnight. The same logic applies even more strongly to portable power stations. Anker and Jackery units in the 1,000Wh to 2,000Wh class are useful for outages, camping, CPAP machines, fridges or remote work, but excessive for people who just need to top up phones and laptops. For everyday gadget charging, a power bank or a smaller station is usually enough. Buy to your actual use case: everyday phones and earbuds need modest wattage; laptops, multi-device households and emergency backup justify the larger sale items.
