That structure helps T-Mobile recover the cost through ongoing service revenue rather than through the resale value of the old phone. The damaged phone itself may have limited value, but it still serves as a qualification tool for the promotion. T-Mobile has increasingly shifted from strict cosmetic grading to “any condition” offers because lowering trade-in barriers makes it easier to persuade people to switch carriers or upgrade. The company has also introduced 36-month financing and, in some cases, $0 upfront financing, which further reduces the friction of signing up. In short, T-Mobile is not betting on the wrecked device being valuable. It is betting that a customer on a premium plan for 36 months is worth far more than the cost of the phone subsidy. The broken trade-in is mainly the trigger for the deal, not the source of its economics.
