Summary
$1,012 Reykjavik hotel rates and $1,172 short-term rentals captured the eclipse frenzy in mid-July, with Bilbao rentals also topping $1,000 ahead of the Aug. 12 event.
By Aug. 10, Reykjavik's lowest available hotel rates for Aug. 12 had fallen 46% to $805, while Iceland's wider capital region dropped 51% to $793 as hotels discounted late.
Lighthouse said Iceland priced rooms speculatively more than a year out and then walked rates back, while northern Spain raised prices later as bookings filled and demand became clearer.
AirDNA said the demand boost is concentrated where the eclipse is visible: nearly 64% of Iceland's roughly 9,000 rentals and 21% of Spain's 365,400 listings sit in the path of totality.
The eclipse is lifting tourism for only a few days, analysts said, while longer-term summer travel patterns are being reshaped more by heatwaves and other extreme weather.
