Summary
Historically low water on the Rhine, Main and Danube is disrupting summer river cruises, pushing operators to swap ships, shift boarding points, bus passengers around blocked stretches and sometimes add hotel stays.
Hot, dry weather drove the drop, with AmaWaterways saying the Danube in Romania has fallen to its lowest level in about 30 years and parts of the Rhine, Main and Upper Danube are below seasonal norms.
AmaWaterways says it has canceled 0 departures so far, while Uniworld is reviewing August sailings case by case and has already switched ships for its Aug. 16 Castles Along the Rhine departures.
Some cancellations have still emerged: Reuters reported on July 16 that Avalon Waterways scrapped a small number of Rhine and Danube departures, while ships were stranded or waiting near Budapest and Mohács.
