Police say the device let Patel profit from the gym’s internet, power and space without taking physical property; experts said such hotspots typically generate only a few dollars to about $100 a month per location.
Patel, of Panama City Beach, Florida, faces three charges in Gwinnett County, and additional charges are pending in Carroll County, Coweta County and Peachtree City, where agencies were also searching for him.
Kennesaw State’s Andy Green said the case shows businesses often protect cash more tightly than network closets, urging them to treat wiring rooms like cash registers.
