J.J. McCarthy said he still views himself as an NFL starter even after Minnesota named him the Vikings' backup quarterback for 2026.
The 2024 first-rounder said he was "obviously disappointed" by the decision to start Kyler Murray but framed it as out of his control and said his focus is staying ready.
McCarthy also pushed back on questions about whether he got a fair shot, saying he was focused on each opportunity rather than revisiting the competition after the fact.
His comments undercut speculation that he wants an immediate exit, even as he acknowledged he wants to be in Minnesota and will try to help the team however he can.
