Park officials are trying to identify a woman after a bat that got caught in her hair near Staircase Bridge around 2 p.m. on Aug. 9 tested positive for rabies.
The woman is being urged to seek immediate medical care and contact the Mason County Health Department because bat bites or scratches can be tiny and easy to miss.
Other visitors may also have been exposed: officials said the bat swooped at multiple people in the Staircase area and asked anyone who had contact with a bat there that day to call a healthcare provider and local health officials.
Rabies is deadly if untreated but preventable with prompt post-exposure treatment, and the park reminded visitors to avoid touching bats or other wildlife and to report any dead or live bat to staff.
