Summary
55% of college students said their school’s administration acts in students’ best interests all or most of the time, according to a Lumina-Gallup survey of 3,801 enrolled associate and bachelor’s students.
12% said leaders act in their interest all the time and 43% said most of the time, while 35% said only some of the time and 11% said rarely or never.
Top-tier schools ranked by U.S. News were slightly less likely to earn that trust, though students still expressed more confidence in campus leaders than in elected political officials.
38% of U.S. adults now say they have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in higher education, down from 42% last year as concerns over cost, campus politics and degree value persist.
The gap lands as federal lawmakers and conservative advocates intensify scrutiny of universities over viewpoint discrimination, antisemitism and DEI policies.
