Eight Senate Democrats asked the Government Accountability Office to audit spending on the White House East Wing and ballroom, arguing the Trump administration may be using public money without congressional approval.
At least $927 million is now planned for White House campus projects, The Washington Post reported, with more than $500 million coming from the Secret Service and White House Military Office despite earlier claims the ballroom would be privately funded.
Chuck Schumer, Jeff Merkley and other Democrats said the administration has not provided planning details or justification needed for Congress to consider authorizing or appropriating funds.
A federal appeals court ruled on Aug. 7 that Trump needed congressional approval to keep the ballroom work moving, and the order halting East Wing construction takes effect after 14 days unless the administration appeals.
