A loss to Ohio State would hurt Texas’ résumé, but it would not be an upset and likely would not derail a playoff path in a 12-team field. A sloppy or shocking loss to Texas State, however, would be the kind of result that immediately changes how the committee views Texas and would put far more pressure on Manning’s Heisman case before SEC play even begins. Ole Miss has some similar emotional-risk factors before October because of the buildup to Lane Kiffin’s return with LSU on Sept. 19, especially with Louisville opening the season. But Ole Miss is not as clearly a “powerhouse” as Texas, Ohio State or Georgia. So if one national title contender is most likely to be ambushed early, Texas is the best bet.
