US Researchers Show 2,782.5 m/s Energy Peaks via Wave Interference Without Breaking Relativity

Physical Review E published U.S. researchers’ finding that wave interference can shift energy peaks to apparent superluminal speeds while leaving information transfer capped at light speed.
In sound-propagation modeling, a 1,500 m/s signal produced peaks at 1,694.5 and 2,782.5 m/s because direct and reflected waves overlapped and moved the peak earlier than a lone direct wave would.
John Spiesberger of the University of Pennsylvania and Eugene Terray of Woods Hole reached the result while studying whale communication tracking with hydrophones; binary 0-and-1 tests showed the information itself never outran the direct wave.
The authors said the mechanism is distinct from quantum tunneling and anomalous dispersion, and they plan experimental tests with sound or light after suggesting the effect could also appear for light in vacuum.
