Summary
Nearly 30 small dogfish sharks were found dead Wednesday morning along about 10 blocks of beach in Sea Isle City, prompting an investigation into what washed them ashore.
Marine scientist Stephen Nagiewicz said pollution is less likely because no people have been affected, and he pointed instead to sharks being accidentally caught and discarded or lost in fishing gear.
New Jersey fish and wildlife officials said summer foraging near shore can also leave dogfish and other small sharks trapped around sandbars as the tide recedes.
The sharks are common in New Jersey and often travel in schools of hundreds or thousands, but state environmental officials had not yet said whether similar strandings were reported elsewhere on the coast.
