Summary
30,632,661 people worked in Bangladesh’s non-farm economy in 2024, up from 24,500,850 in 2013, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ Economic Census 2024.
9,028,656 manufacturing jobs made it the largest non-farm employer in 2024, with the sector adding about 1.85 million positions over the decade for 25.7% growth.
255.1% growth in administrative and support services was the fastest among major sectors, while construction jumped 248.1% and education, health and ICT also posted strong gains.
8,179,807 jobs in wholesale and retail trade still made it the second-largest sector, but employment there fell 2.6%; mining and quarrying dropped 73% to 17,426.
The sector shifts point to a changing employment structure beyond agriculture, though a Dhaka University professor said BBS methodology and the quality of growth in some services warrant scrutiny.
