Summary
Upper 90s to low 100s are forecast across the South and Southeast this weekend, with at least nine daily high-temperature records expected to fall and many warm overnight-low records also under threat.
Heat indices of 105-115 degrees are expected as a strengthening upper-high traps heat and humidity, prompting widespread Extreme Heat Warnings, Heat Advisories and other alerts across central, southern and eastern states.
Friday's biggest record threats include Fayetteville, North Carolina, at 101 degrees versus a 1918 record of 100, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at 94 versus 93; Charlotte, Orlando and Tallahassee are also near record levels.
Saturday and Sunday, the record risk spreads from Texas to the Gulf Coast and Southeast, with Charleston forecast at 98 versus its 96 record, Savannah near its 1918 mark of 100, and Baton Rouge and New Orleans set to match daily records.
Forecasters say some areas could see their hottest temperatures so far this year—or in several years—as the heat dome settles over a broad swath of the country.
