Summary
A 2021 blog post resurfaced showing Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed likened Donald Trump’s role in Jan. 6 to Osama bin Laden’s role in the 9/11 attacks.
El-Sayed wrote that Trump “recruited, radicalized and reassured” rioters much as bin Laden did the 19 hijackers, and called Trump’s conduct “terrorism” warranting impeachment and disqualification from office.
Campaign spokeswoman Roxie Richner said critics were falsely implying El-Sayed wanted Trump executed, arguing he was calling only for legal accountability because “no one is above the law.”
The revived post adds to scrutiny of El-Sayed’s past statements and his appearances with streamer Hasan Piker, whose “America deserved 9/11” remark El-Sayed has disavowed without renouncing Piker himself.
Republicans are already using those controversies in attack ads as allied groups pour millions into Michigan’s Senate race, widening the issue beyond the primary fight.
