ProjectXplore identified the wreck of HMS Tiger in the English Channel, ending a 118-year search for the Royal Navy warship lost off the Isle of Wight in 1908.
Five years of archive work and analysis of the ship’s final-voyage records narrowed the search area enough for divers and maritime historians to locate the shattered site.
The collision during a Royal Navy training exercise split HMS Tiger in two and killed more than half of the 57 people aboard; fewer than 30 survived.
The discovery lands as the UK pushes Armed Forces Bill changes that would protect newly found military wrecks immediately, making unauthorized disturbance or removal of objects an offence.
ProjectXplore and the Royal Navy said the proposed “look but don’t touch” approach could preserve HMS Tiger as a site of research, diving and remembrance.
