The key new signal was the dissipative part of Titan’s Love number—0.135 ± 0.035—recovered after noise cuts of roughly 25% to 30%; the inferred tidal quality factor of 4.5 ± 1.1 is far too lossy for the team’s global-ocean models.
That interior would dissipate about 4 terawatts of orbital energy, mostly in high-pressure ice warm enough to convect and host scattered melt pockets, making Titan’s hydrosphere "slushy" rather than a single buried sea.
The 380-kilometer figure is a central estimate, not a direct measurement: the modeled high-pressure layer spans roughly 228 to 529 kilometers, and the conclusion still depends on assumptions about ice rheology, composition and temperature.
The result challenges a 2012 ocean interpretation and differs from a 2024 reanalysis, while NASA’s Dragonfly mission—launching no earlier than 2028—could test Titan’s hidden layering with seismic data in the 2030s.
