Q: Why did Ford strip the ultimate track package from its most extreme 795-horsepower Mustang convertible in over a decade?

Ford dropped the ultimate track package because this 795-hp convertible was engineered as an open-air grand tourer, not as a lap-time special. That decision flows from the car’s basic design constraints and intended use. Without a fixed roof, a convertible is inherently less rigid than a coupe, even with Ford’s added magnesium tower-to-tower brace. Ford said the Dark Horse SC Convertible was tuned differently because its mission is “high-speed open-air touring,” so it gets softer springs, unique sway bars and a less aggressive MagneRide calibration rather than the coupe’s hardest-core track setup. That also explains why the convertible does not offer the coupe’s Track Package, including carbon-fiber wheels, grippier tires and GTD-derived carbon-ceramic brakes. Those parts are aimed at maximum circuit performance, but Ford chose a more compliant setup better suited to road use, stability and comfort with the fabric roof in place or folded down. Aerodynamics were another factor. Engineers revised the hood vent and changed the rear wing mounts while deleting the gurney flaps, specifically to manage airflow around the convertible body and maintain balance at speed. Ford’s chief engineer indicated that if the car had been designed for track duty like the coupe, additional reinforcements likely would have been needed. In short, Ford stripped the ultimate track package because the convertible’s role is different: less track weapon, more ultra-fast open-top performance cruiser.

Ford raised its purple 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible 40 feet above Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, using the crane display to launch the 31st Woodward Dream Cruise.
The 795-horsepower roadster made its online debut at 6 a.m. and is set to be lowered at 4:30 p.m. Friday to join the Lights & Sirens parade with former Lions receiver Herman Moore driving.
Como’s Mustang and Bronco corrals anchor Ford’s footprint on the 16-mile route, with more than 700 customer Mustangs and 130 Broncos expected by Saturday.
About 40,000 cars are projected to hit Woodward this weekend, drawing owners from across the U.S. and reinforcing the event’s status as the world’s largest one-day car gathering.
