University of Southampton researchers said their re-analysis of the 2025 Yonsei study restores the standard picture of an accelerating universe, calling the earlier challenge to dark energy a false alarm.
Using Dark Energy Survey observations and the same underlying dataset, the team said the 2025 paper missed a known galaxy-mass brightness correction and relied on a flawed age proxy for supernova host stars.
Those errors weakened the claimed link between supernova brightness and galaxy age and, Southampton said, overstated possible bias in distance measurements by a factor of three to five.
Yonsei researchers still stand by their conclusion and say a follow-up study accepted by MNRAS again finds stellar-population age materially affects Type Ia supernova calibration.
Dark energy remains the leading explanation for cosmic acceleration, and upcoming Rubin Observatory work over the next 10 years is expected to deliver a supernova sample 20 times larger than DES.
