OFE Adds 2-Phase Language Training to Immigrant Manufacturing Program

Summary
Opportunities for Employment has expanded its Manufacturing Production Worker Program by adding language instruction for immigrants and refugees with Canadian Language Benchmark levels 1 to 4.
The new training targets a key hiring barrier in Winnipeg manufacturing: newcomers often have job skills but lack English, industry vocabulary, Canadian workplace familiarity and comfort with imperial measurements.
Two eight-week phases now combine language, math and hands-on preparation shaped by employer input, with up to two extra weeks of support in each phase; the program is free.
Vipandeep Gahir, an immigrant from India who has lived in Winnipeg for two years, said he already has a job offer after taking the program.
The expansion sits within OFE's Refugee Employment Development Initiative, which aims to speed newcomers into manufacturing jobs and longer-term stability such as buying cars or homes.
