Matthias Jaissle was seen signalling to kit staff at the hydration break, when the team changed into the lilac third shirt. So the failure was less about not noticing any colour overlap at all and more about underestimating how severe it would appear in practice. The white-backed Newcastle shirt and Leverkusen’s pale blue-and-white away kit created a conflict that should have been caught earlier, but only became unmistakable once the match was underway.
